Why Lehigh?

WHY LEHIGH?

In answering a question like "Why Lehigh?" we had to take it to the 'people' and get their ideas and input. The "why Lehigh" by 'our people', looking at this list, could very easily be termed "why nots" to others...Different strokes for different folks.

  • The average, nice family home in Lehigh sits on a lot of equivalent size as 4 lots in most larger towns. The same house that sells for $120,000.00 twenty five miles from here, or $200,000.00 forty miles away sells for fifty to sixty thousand in Lehigh.

  • Most places within a hundred mile radius of Lehigh have to use bottled water to drink, however, Lehigh water is some of the best tasting water in the state. As a matter of fact, we sell water to restaurants located in many of the 'water challenged' cities in south central Kansas.

  • Our tornado warning siren has only sounded once in the last decade to warn of an impending dangerous storm, however, we know it works because they blow it to announce such things as Easter egg hunt, Halloween party and Santa arriving in town.

  • No planes, trains, or police sirens, but we have plenty of tractors, combines, and grain trucks coming through town to visit the co-op.

  • Lehigh has very few fenced yards, local kids make paths through many yards getting to where they need to go. Besides without fences, when one family is having a BBQ its not uncommon for several of their neighbors to pool their resources, magically transforming a backyard BBQ into an impromptu block party.

  • In Lehigh the homes are painted any color the owner wants, and many of the yards are on a blanket of green with yellow dandelion polka-dots. There is no "neighborhood associations", you know, the ones that each homeowner pays money to, so that they can make decisions governing what you may or may not do with your property. Of course, this is one area that some new-comers have a problem adjusting to. Some 'outside' folk feel it's the responsibility of our city council to spray poisons for bugs & weeds, police the children off of others lawns, make dogs stop barking or change the life-styles and habits of a few to conform to their own. It however, doesn't take long before they are loving the 'country' freedoms we have 'in town'.

We polled four of our newest families with the question, why Lehigh? The results were unanimous, though not always in the same order:

1. Price of home 2. Quiet / Like living in the country. 3. Safer place to raise children. 4. An excuse to finally get a riding lawn mower.

Some people will look at this and say "Yuk, how back-woods that place sounds." Others will say "Wow, that place sounds too good to be true." We invite all those 'like-minded' 'Wow' individuals and business to give Lehigh, Kansas a try! IT'S SMALL, BUT IT'S HOME!
