Ramona was established in 1887 as a railroad town on the Rock Island line. It was the first station down the line from Herington. The origin of the town's name is not known. One story suggests that the town was named for a 19th century novel named "Ramona" written by Helen Hunt Jackson. The novel tells the story of a struggling Indian Princess. Another version says that the town was named for a Spanish woman from the times when this area was owned by a wealthy Spaniard from New Orleans. For a time they considered naming Ramona, Shields, KS, after the first teacher in the community, J. B. Shields; but they discovered that there was already a Shields, Kansas. Ramona is proud to be a Centennial Town, having celebrated 100 years in 1987. Our population has been around 100 people for the past twenty or thirty years.
